Gertrude grew up with a strong awareness of artistic images, and began creating art of her own as soon as she could hold a pencil. "To me, art is visual poetry - it let's me capture the images I see and express the strong feelings I have about the world around me."
Although she grew up in Canada and received her early training there, Idaho is her home of choice. She wants to spend the rest of her life attempting to reveal its amazing diversity in her paintings. "I know there is a painting waiting for me out there around every bend in the road."
Her desire is to stay true to her subject by responding to it through careful observation. She wants each painting to stand on its own, with its own feeling, defining shapes, light and shadow, coloration and atmosphere. Each painting she does is a different experience for her, and she wants that to be felt by the viewer. She is awed by the incredible challenge each scene presents, but feels empowered as she picks up paint on her brush and puts down that first bit of color on a new canvas. "The life out there stirs renewed life within me and brings out energy I often don't realize I have."
